Hi all,

New member here and thought I'd seek for some help about my luck in converting my VHS videos through on OBS studio. I have a USB 2.0 capture card and have successfully linked it to OBS. Audio comes out well however my video is constantly choppy, blinking or stuttering (whatever you want to call it).

I have tried the instructions on some YouTube videos on setting it up however I still have no luck. Would anyone happen to know why this may be the case? I have tried this on my laptop (HP elitebook) and also my Mac (2013 edition) and it still does the same.

I have set the resolution for 768x576. For the output settings (simple) under record tab I have the encoder at x264, encoder preset at ultrafast, recording quality at high quality.

I would greatly appreciate any help. Thank you in advance.

just to verify the video isn't displaying a blue screen occasionally or the picture is experiencing artifacts. this is a frame timing issue caused by obs.

if it's macrovision tapes made before 1984, don't have the protection. a way it can be mitigated is by never playing a vhs tape from the beginning. in some circumstances playing a macrovision tape from the beginning with a capture card can cause the vhs player to make an autodialer type sound. it happened when I tried to play what about bob through the capture card. personally I was just trying to watch the movie on the computer upscaled to 4k. but obviously if you can view a movie on a computer you can capture it. what about bob is a digitally mastered tape and has some of the worst macrovision ive seen. macrovision seems to be designed to prevent people from connecting a vhs player to a computer. the reason I think this is that turning up the volume on the tv causes the macrovision protection to go into full force. in other words it realizes the picture on screen is not the same as the actual tape. it seems like macrovision will allow you to record it on some tapes if youre willing to deal with some compromises. essentially for a brief period of time or at certain infrequent intervals. a blue screen will appear. this prevents you from getting a good copy of the tape. however after a while the blue screen disappears and the movie can be played as long as nothing appears on the screen. I think this is because digital mastering is done from tape reels not vhs tapes and macrovision doesn't want to mess with movie studios legitimately copying their own tapes.

Not quite, more like a black blink or stutter in footage. The frequency of the stutter is quite a lot. No issues with the audio. The VHS is from the 90's and has home footage recorded on it. Just want to transfer it to a digital file so I can protect it. I have also tried it on another VHS casette and the same issue occurs.
