VHS Input via USB Converter

I am running a VHS tape from a VCR into my computer via a Component to USB adapter (Diamond Multimedia) . I know the VCR is working properly. I tested it by hooking it up to a TV. Audio and Video are perfect.

I am using "Video Capture Device" as the source on OBS.
On my computer screen in the OBS App the video displays very choppy and in black and white. I have attached a few screen shots.

The recording works fine. The audio is perfect but the video is choppy and black and white.

Can someone help with this issue?

I can only take a few guesses:
  • B&W could be a capture device configuration? Are you using composite video input? That has three analog RCA plugs but all 3 are needed. Do you know for sure that your source player is outputting (chroma?) information? I had a computer that only outputted B&W video because the NTSC converter inside of it was partially broken.
  • I saw on the bottom right of your screenshots that you're capturing at 30 fps. NTSC video is interlaced at 60fps. I can see interlacing in your screenshots. You should capture at 60 fps, which will probably still leave all the interlacing, or do realtime de-interlacing. I've not done this with OBS personally but I often take NTSC interlaced material and de-interlace using software encoders like Handbrake. But the choppiness is probably due to not capturing at the full frame rate.

MarsConcert, I am using a composite (Red, White, Yellow) to USB converter. It works for some tapes but others are displaying in black and white. I will try these changes and update the post.

MarsConcert, thanks for your help.

I changed the capture setting to 60 fps and experienced the same results. My tapes plays in color when the VCR is connected directly to a TV via the 3 component cables. I have attached a few screen shots.
Some tapes record perfectly. I have this issue with only specific tapes . As stated the problematic tapes display perfectly when palyed back directly to a TV.

I would look towards a capture device or driver problem first. One way you could find out is try opening that capture device in another program besides OBS. If you still see choppy and b/w elsewhere with problematic tapes then it's even more likely a device or driver/setup problem.
