very choppy with GTX 1050

Trying to record 1920x1080 60fps using version 28.0.0. HW is GTX 1050 on I7 desktop. Just recording to mkv which upon playback via VLC looks very choppy. I've spent several days sifting through a multitude of choppiness recipes none of which work. Some of the results are not as bad as others, but none of them are acceptable. Does my setup just not have the horsepower to make this work? Since this seems to be a common problem has anyone created a step-by-step guide for resolving this issue? Looked for a "sticky" in the forum, but didn't find one to cover this. Am happy to RTFM, please just point me in the right direction. Thanks.

Problem solved. As an experiment I used Handbrake to encode the mkv to mp4. The mp4 doesn't have any issues - it plays back smoothly. So the issue seems to be with playback of the mkv. One of the admins might want to make this a "sticky" as common advice that is being given is to record only to mkv without mentioning that if you want to check the recording you might want to encode to mp4 before checking. This will save many folks a lot of exasperation.
