Question / Help Using OBS with an audio interface

im relatively new to using OBS, but I run a card game podcast and am looking at getting into shout casting for tournament games. The games are played online and I’d be casting with another individual from another state. So my dilemma is this; I have a microphone (xlr) which feeds into a Focusrite Scarlett audio interface (input 1). My skype audio comes in from a separate PC and routes into my interface (input 3) (Input 2 is another microphone that’s not used for this endeavor). This set up works perfectly in my DAW for recording podcast episodes, but I cannot get the audio from skype (input 3) to route into OBS. Has anyone here tried to do something similar to this, or have any ideas on how to set up the system to work?

If the DAW can hear it but OBS can't I almost wonder if it's a WASAPI thing. Your first 2 channels it can hear, but the other channels can only be heard over ASIO? Doesn't really make sense, my Interface only has 2 inputs so I can't confirm any fuckery like that.

I can tell you that OBS cannot hear ASIO audio, it is completely deaf to DAWs when using ASIO

I'm assuming you have a 6i6, which means 3rd input is actually 5/6. your Line In on the back?

18i20 2nd Gen, but input 3 is still a TS connection. Correct all my channels come through with the ASIO driver in the DAW. I’ve got everything else disabled so the Scarlett is my only audio device. My only thoughts have been to install a program like JACK and try to virtually route into OBS, or to switch my mic to input 4, and then manually route the monitor out back into input 1.

I edited my post, OBS can't hear ASIO(Praise be the day when it finally can), what OBS is hearing when you speak into your mic is the raw input over WASAPI, completely bypassing the DAW.

But that shouldn't stop Input 3 from also being heard over WASAPI, what happens if you plug Skype into Input 2? I wonder if Windows/WASAPI is treating it as only a 2 channel device, ASIO can see all 8 inputs. It should be 1/3/5/7 are Left Channel, 2/4/6/8 are Right Channel

That may be the case that it thinks it’s only 2 channel. I’ve done live streaming with 2 mics (input 1 and 2), and not had an issue. There’s a bit of a echo if something is loud enough it’s picked up by both mics, but they’re dynamic so it doesn’t happen often.

Easiest way to test is plug a mic into Input 3, or 4,5,6,7,8 and talk into it

See if Windows picks it up

You may want to unplug your Input 1 mic so there is no mistaking what is inputting

I checked that and only inputs 1 and 2 are coming through into the windows recording device. Every other input wether XLR or TS doesn’t register unless I’m in my DAW. (It still only registers in the DAW and not under recording devices in windows settings)

I was also putzing around and discovered that the skype call will come through if connected to input 2. It’s not ideal, but in a pinch I’ll be able to get it to do what I want. I’ll just have to resign myself to only ever having 2 channels until OBS installs ASIO comparability.

I figured it out! I have the same interface (gen 1 though) and was SOOOO frustrated. Open sound proprieties, find the 18i20, right click, open properties, select the advanced tab, in the "Default format" area there should be a drop down box that default says "2 channel....." swap it to "8 channel....." Also for me it wouldn't let me do 24 bit, only 16, and cretin Hz settings were not supported, so try multiple until you get one to work. Then re-test your inputs 3-8. This solved it for me!
