Hello,
Last year I built a PC to live stream sporting events. It worked pretty flawlessly considering I went into it knowing a ton about computers, but pretty much nothing about streaming, video cameras, capture cards, etc.
One flaw I didn't recognize until the last minute was the fact that my video camera didn't output sound when in live view mode. It output sound through the HDMI when in playback mode, but not when actually recording. I only had a day to solve this, so I bought a cheap microphone, set my desktop audio to listen to the microphone and then streamed the desktop audio through OBS. It worked, but was pretty quiet. Clearly this wasn't the best option, but it was all I could think of at the time!
I've since upgraded my capture card to the Micomsoft SC-512N1-L/DVI (the one without the pass-through). I figured out that I can use the HDMI to input the video and the A/V to input audio at the same time. I figured this would be a much better option than what I was previously doing.
My question is: how can I get audio from a microphone into the capture card? I have 3.5mm to RCA cables, so ignore that for now. I know a standard microphone won't work, but what about an external camcorder mic? I've noticed a lot of shotgun mics require a battery to operate. Will these work as an audio input to the capture card, or do I need something else?
