Question / Help Using a video camera in OBS?

I am looking into purchasing a Canon Vixia HF R800. It has a HDMI and USB connection. Would OBS recognize this camera as a video capturing device just by USB or HDMI? I have both of those on my computer

Possibly, but camcorders do not make good webcams. Do not purchase one for that purpose. Many don't work and others perform more poorly at common webcam tasks than much less expensive webcams.

The last Canon I owned that I used that way connected by Firewire.

If you want to connect it via HDMI you will need a capture device, and good ones can cost as much or more than a good webcam.

If you’re referring to using a camcorder to stream, that’s not my intention. I am wanting to record. I don’t have the money to purchase expensive equipment to stream.

If you are going to record then it doesn't matter about connecting the camera in OBS... I mean you can just separately record in the camera it self what you plan to do. Then if its gameplay have OBS record the game it self only. Then on editing in what ever software you use then mix together both the camera recording and the gameplay from OBS, to then use your editing skills to create good content.

Also about that camera OBS will not recognize it from USB(when its connected to a computer its just the SD card reader detected from Windows)... You will need an HDMI capture card to get the video feed, as in on the camera output HDMI to capture card input HDMI.
Basically here is Elgato advertising their cam link(hdmi capture) with that camera Canon Vixia HF R800: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=To2gM1oxT2Y

To clarify: nothing I said was intended to be specific to streaming.

I have no idea what you want to record, I'm just saying that being used this way, OBS is expecting to interact with a webcam. Some things that would be trivial to do with a webcam will not be possible using a camcorder connected via USB; some features of your camcorder that you may consider essential may not be available to OBS when used in this mode. The recordings you make with the camera while connected in this way may be inferior to those the camera would make itself while recording to its own media.

OBS isn't usually used with camcorders, as a result, there may not be that many users who are doing so, or have done so with the specific model you want-- the last time I connected a Canon camcorder to OBS this way was several years ago, and the quality was less than what I wanted and expected.

If you wish to do this the above suggestion of the CamLink, connected to the camera via HDMI, would almost certainly be preferable, although there are some camcorders who do not give clean HDMI output and also have problems when used in this way-- but it would very likely perform better than if connected via USB. (My understanding of this camera is that it DOES given clean HDMI output, so I think you're okay there.)
