We had a chat in the Discord #development channel along these lines, and I wanted to create a tracking issue for a feature that addresses this use case. My specific needs are for sending UDP multicast packets and basic HTTP requests. The luasocket "rock" is perfect for my use case, though it currently is difficult to install and will block the rendering thread.
