USB Camera/mic - reconnection of prior capture device

Hi-
I'm exploring using USB cameras with H.264 encoding aggregated ad-hoc at each setup
with various hubs to combine mic and cameras together coming back to the computer.
One beauty of the cameras with H.264 is that the data rates are so low that many can
travel over one USB connection.
A small amount of experimentation is telling me that generic USB camera feeds
(& prob mics) are not uniquely identified to OBS.
In fact I have not been able to disconnect a generic USB camera
and reconnect it and have it continuing playing, I have to redo the camera selection
in the Camera Capture dialog. I can remember this was the case with wirecast many years
ago with USB and firewire cams and coming back to this technology recently
I thought things must have gotten better. Apparently not.
Does it have to be this way? Is there no identifying feature of USB camera (& Mic?)
devices that would let OBS discover that a (new) connection matches one that was already
setup in the camera and sound selections prior? Some kind of "MAC" address or something?
If not I supposed someone setting up an installation using these devices has to run
through each camera (and mic) device and set it up for a particular shoot. That's a lot of
potentially error prone work and just seems wrong for how far this tech has come.
