just wondering if I should be periodically looking for updates and how is this done, thanks.

Setting/General check check for updates.. It will let you know if one is available..

Also, on start-up OBS will do an update check and pop a dialog box if a new version is available.

Plugins are not checked though, and any you've installed will have to be manually updated.
