Trying to video record another software is use

I installed OBS and set Hotkeys for Start Recording, Stop Recording, Pause, UnPause.

I pressed the hotkey for Start Recording and the Hotkey for Stop but when I found the recorded video and opened the recorded videot in VLC Media Players I got the message there was no content chosen?

I'm not sure how to correct that?

If I press the other software to run it then byt eh time I press the Hotkey for OBS to Start Recording it will be too late to capture what I'm doing in the other software.

Thank you.

So the recording seems to be empty, did you actually record something? Was there anything visible in the big window (in this example of an empty scene it is black).

If you want to record something within other software, you probably want to add a Window Capture source to your scene. Do you need sound as well?

Concerning the hotkeys: please check Settings, Advanced, scroll down to Hotkeys. Here you can disable the OBS hotkeys if the main OBS window is or is not in focus. You'll need the option Never disable hotkeys.

Two more remarks on this:
  • OBS Studio has real hotkeys rather than keyboard shortcuts. So if you set the stop recording hotkey to F9, on pressing Ctrl+F9 the recording will be stopped. So make sure your hotkeys don't interfere with any other key combination in the other software. You wouldn't be the first to be unpleasantly surprised. Tip: we found that most numeric keypad keys are recognised as distinct keys. So you could have Num * as a pause key if you normally type asterisks using Shift+8.
  • It is strongly advised not to record in MP4 format. That saves all meta information only at the very end of the recording, so in case of any unexpected errors, you will not only loose the recording from that point on, but the complete file from the beginning is lost. Go to Settings, Output, Recording tab and set Recording format to MKV. Afterwards at File, Remux Recordings the file can be converted to MP4 if desired.
