Troubles with obs audio

So for the longest time, my elgato capture card worked with my obs and I could use it for streaming, but also so I could just play console games on my monitor with no issues at all. Then last week for reasons I still don't quite get, my pc crashed while streaming and a bunch of settings got jumbled. Anyways now everything is fine except for the elgato audio in obs. In the mixer, the audio is picked up in the elgato section and the bar moves accordingly. But I can't hear it. That is unless I turn audio monitor to monitor and output. But I can see the desktop audio in the mixer (which I can hear) is noticeably delayed behind both the gameplay shown and the elgato's own (unhearable) audio. And when I do hear it, it is oddly distorted. Why is this? Please I've spent all day trying to fix this it's driving me absolutely insane I just want to be able to use my elgato to play games again.
