The audio on my Linux PC comes out through the microphone using headphones, it is mixed digitally.

It's difficult to explain, it's best to watch the video.

What interface do you have, if any? Some have a "loopback" switch on them that sends the computer's output back to the computer. I have no idea why that switch exists, because the computer itself can do that just fine (as you show), but it's there, and that's what it does.

Maybe switch exists as legacy from 'back in the day' when s/w and/or OS couldn't control that feature properly ???

I don't think it's due to any interface because it happens to me on Linux Mint and all the distros. I've been using Linux for 15 years and this is the first time something like this has happened to me...

Also, capturing screen with simplescreenrecorder doesn't happen to me, it only happens to me with OBS

Maybe. Kinda like Windows *still* keeping exclusive access to video sources, which has tripped up a bunch of people too. ("Why is it blank in OBS?! My other app shows it just fine. See?") Ubuntu Studio does allow multiple things to use the same camera at the same time, and it's NICE!!! Wouldn't be surprised if other flavors did too.

Anyway, back on topic:

That sounds more probable that it *is* a physical switch on a physical interface. Every system does it, not just your primary, and they all started doing it at the same time. If you have that switch, then it probably got bumped.

Does that one ignore the direct mic and only pick up the desktop audio? So it sounds like when you turned the mic off in OBS?

So far, everything's making sense according to my original theory...
