Teleprompter Substitute

Hi listmates,

I’m video recording a 2+ minute video re: a free writing program I’ve created for the public library.

I’ve created a “poor man’s teleprompter” by writing the pitch text in MS Word and scrolling that text down the page on a laptop either top the right or with the laptop below the DSLR camera. I’m the sole subject in the video promo but in either case my eyes are looking either down or to the side of the laptop screen.

It creates either awkward eye movements or downright creepy looks. Teens will be watching this video as an invite to write for this writer’s contest so it needs to look as if I’m looking straight into the camera talking to them as a friend.

Each word must be voiced perfectly as there can be no improv of the script.

Could I set up a webcam on a dektop or use se a Dell laptop's built in webcam and record myself reading the script on the screen?

Thank you!

You're still going to 'deflect' down.

There are a bunch of YT videos on how to create a DIY teleprompter, fairly cheaply (usually just the cost of a pane of glass).

I'll second this. From my 27 years in TV, it was pretty apparent a prompter is just an angled piece of glass placed in front of the camera lens, with a screen below reflecting off it. Should be pretty easy to set up using a tablet, or even a smartphone with a big enough screen if you are close to it. (All bets are off if you are 20 feet away, as I was when doing studio recordings of my segments.)

There are a few apps out there for the prompter screen output.
