Hey,
Hardware Used:
To work around this, I’ve been using GPU encoding for recording (which works decently) and CPU encoding for streaming.
I’ve been experimenting with different settings. I started with 1440p60 SVT AV1, preset 8 (default) and immediately ran into problems. As soon as I started recording, the screen turned black, and the GPU utilization (3D) spiked to 100%. Everything became laggy, and on the stats tab, FPS, avg. time to render frame, and frames missed due to rendering lag all turned red. Gaming performance was terrible, even on mobile games, with FPS dropping below 30, and the audio getting out of sync.
I tried using preset 9 and preset 10, but encountered the same issue. Sometimes, I also saw a timeout message (something like "encoder took too long, timeout after 5 seconds"). I also tested AOM AV1 and x264 (medium preset), but the GPU utilization still spiked to 100%, and CPU usage increased, though not as much as expected.
Next, I tried downscaling to 1080p60, which is the target resolution for streaming. With SVT AV1 preset 8, the GPU utilization stayed lower (less than 25%) but I still faced occasional timeouts. Preset 9 seemed more stable, though CPU usage was much higher (~40-50%, depending on motion and preset). Not ideal, but manageable. AOM AV1 preset 8 ran more stably with much lower CPU usage (around 25%), though the quality suffered a bit.
I understand that software encoders can be demanding on the CPU, but is it normal for the GPU to hit 100% utilization like this? I’m aware that 1440p60 with SVT AV1 might not be feasible unless using a higher preset, but x264 medium at 1440p60 didn’t perform well either, and I thought x264 would be more manageable.
It’s not a huge issue for me since I’m planning to move on from the B580 (was an experiment, didn’t impress me – I’m waiting for the RTX 5080). Also, I don’t plan to use software encoders except for streaming until I get a better GPU, but I’m curious if this behavior is expected.
Additional question:
Is the difference in CPU load and quality between AOM AV1 and SVT AV1 typical? Any recommendations on which AV1 software encoder to use for better balance between CPU load and quality?
Hardware Used:
- CPU: Intel Core Ultra 7 265KF - all P-cores and E-cores enabled, with a 360mm AIO cooler
- GPU: Intel Arc B580 (ASRock Challenger)
- RAM: 64GB DDR5 6400 MT/s CL 32 Dual Kit (XMP Profile enabled)
- My monitor's native resolution is 2560x1440 at 60 FPS. For streaming, I use Lanczos to downscale to 1080p60 in the Output tab.
