Question / Help Streaming War Thunder

Hello,

I'm looking to start streaming War Thunder using Twitch and OBS. When I play normally, the game runs around 25-30 fps but when I try and stream, it drops down to around 10-15fps. Gameplay and stream is drastically affected by dropped frames. Below are all the specs and settings I'm running. If anyone has any suggestions on how I could fix this (whether hardware or setting related) I'd greatly appreciate it.

CPU:

iMac 27-inch Mid-2011

Processor: 2.7 GHz Intel Core i5

Memory: 16GB 1333 MHz DDr3

Graphics: AMD Radeon HD 6770M 512 MB

Software: OS X 10.9.5

Internet Speed (roughly):

Provider: Xfinity - Comcast

Download: 30Mbs

Upload: 6Mbs

War Thunder Settings:

Resolution: 2560x1440 (I really like this res as it is the only option I can use to have a true full screen)

VSync: Off (Don't even know what this does)

Full Client Check Box: Yes

Graphics: Low

OBS Settings > Output > Streaming:

Encoder: x264

Rescale Output: 2560x1440

Bitrate: 2500

Keyframe Interval: 0

Use CBR: Yes

CPU Usage Preset: veryfast

Profile: None

Tune: None:

Variable Framerate: No

x264 Options: Blank

OBS Settings > Video:

Base (Canvas) Resolution: 2560x1440

Output (Scaled) Resolution: 1280x720

Downscale Filter: Bicubic (Sharpened scaling, 16 samples)

Common FPS Values: 30

OBS Settings > Advanced:

Stream Delay: Disabled

Automatic Reconnect: Enabled

Retry Delay (seconds): 10

Maximum Retries: 20

If 30 FPS on Low is the most you can manage before OBS is even running it sounds like you're in for a bad time.

CPU. He's saying that if 30 fps on low graphical settings is the best your machine is capable BEFORE trying to stream via OBS, then most likely the machine cannot sustain that framerate, at that resolution, with OBS running. OBS is resource-intensive.

I'd say your best bet is to go to a lower scaled resolution for the game, like 1080p, and see what happens.

Thanks for clarifying. I guess the answer I am looking for is what specific piece of hardware in my machine is causing such a low fps? I ask because I'd like to upgrade it if possible (albeit iMacs are a PIA to do from what I can see).

I tried lowering the resolution and it did make quite a difference, however, for some reason, the game won't stay in full screen unless I choose the highest resolution setting, 2560x1440 in my case.

Thanks for the help.

These two. Neither are easily upgradeable in a 2011 iMac, but it might be possible.

I've no particular experience with War Thunder, but for comparison, I've got a Minecraft modpack with 100+ mods including shaders, and with all the bells and whistles on I get about 60fps before launching OBS and about 40 fps afterwards.

I'm running a 3.4 Ghz i7 4770 and an Nvidia 660Ti with 2GB of video ram. Both of these are several years old now and were not even top of the line when they were bought, but they're still more capable than a five year old iMac, and even then barely exceeds the minimum framerate for streaming (30fps) at 1080p.

Without new hardware your best option is to play at 1080p windowed, choose Display capture, and crop (drag in the preview window to resize the capture area).
