Question / Help Streaming Newbie Needs Help!

Hello all,

I am going to be streaming some music creation and I need to figure out a basic 2 computer setup.

I will need to capture audio and video from my recording computer, (which will sometimes be an Late 2013 iMac and sometimes be a Mac Pro) to my Streaming computer (a mid 2014 MacBookPro). Has anyone had any success with this?

My solution for audio would be to take some line outs from my recording interface (attached to the recording computer) and run it into another audio interface attached to my streaming computer.

For video I was thinking of connecting a thunderbolt cable from my iMac to my MBP and using target display mode to transmit the display of the iMac to one of the desktops of my MBP. I will be finding out if that works tomorrow.

I have no solution for getting video from the other recording computer which is a Mac Pro. Is there a way I can just go video out from the display?

Also, Would an external capture card like an Elgato be the best thing for this situation? or should I be able to just get video straight from my recording computer using my methods above? I also would like to stream from my wii u and other consoles sometime and I am under the impression that an Elgato would be used for that.

Please excuse my Noobness, Any insight into this matter would be extremely appreciated! I am hoping to start streaming thursday night and thats going to be with the Mac Pro.

Thanks all!

Hello!

I can't answer all of your questions, but here's the verdict: Using an external capture card might work, but avoid Elgato if you're a Mac user. Elgato doesn't provide capture drivers for Mac, so it won't show up in Video Capture Device, making the workflow harder. It's better to use the Magewell XI100DUSB, recommended by many OBS Studio Mac users.

Hey Ryan,

I, like many other Mac users I'm sure, have been through the ringer on this one. My hardware is both later and less complicated than yours, but I use an Elgato HD (pre-HD60) and the best way I've found to use it is to have the HD GameCapture software full-screened on a second monitor, then I use Display Capture in OBS and select that monitor. The new version of OBS Studio, with the Current (new) version of Elgato's HD Game Capture on OSX El Capitan sorted out any sync issues i had and even compensates for the Elgato built-in video delay (1.5 sec or w/e it is). Don't know if this might help you, but Otherwise I'd love to hear about your experience with the Magewell because I might go that way when the time comes to shell out for a new capture device.

Cheers and good luck man.
