I'm completely new to this stimulating platform, and not a techie.

Is there a slick way to include a moving strapline across the bottom of the screen, as on 24hour news channels?

Yes, you can make this with one or two sources. In the first source, you prepare some kind of static overlay that will contain the static (non moving) parts of that screen area. In the second source, you insert the moving content you intend to show. Add the "Scroll" Filter to it to make it actually scroll.
