Sound is garbled

VCR to Laptop, connections are all correct, setting exactly as prescribed in the instruction. Simply trying to record old VHS tape to digital versions. When recording the audio sounds perfect, but when replaying the recording it is garbled (I can kinda make out what we are saying...).


Windows 10 / 64bit on a pretty powerful recent HP Elitebook 1040. I've unistalled/reinstalled, check my cables/connections, etc. to no avail. HELP!
