SOLVED: USB webcam 'tearing'

There's definitely something going on with USB3 vs USB2 ports. I've got an HP Spectre laptop where the Logitech C922 and C930 would not work reliably without tearing. The config involved a Thunderbolt dock, using that to power the laptop and plugging the cameras into it (via an in-built USB hub).

I moved them to an old Pluggable brand USB2 hub. That still didn't help, as I had the hub plugged into the Thunderbolt dock (a Caldigital unit). Once I moved the USB2 hub to an actual USB port on the side of the laptop the problems appear to have stopped.

So if you've having issues with USB webcams... go into the Windows Device Manager (win-r devmgmt.msc) and switch to the View->Devices by Connection listing. Look to see 'where' your cameras are being connected in this 'logical' view. You may find they're connected into a chipset or host interface that can't handle them properly. A solution might be to move them to other ports on your machine and see where they reappear in the 'By Connection' tree view. While all the ports physically look the same, they're not all connected the same way 'behind the scenes'. Some chipsets do a worse job than others handling this.
