Question / Help Simple mode audio issue, Advanced mode lesser video

EDIT: Well, I just saw a post about Windows Media Player... I uploaded the video to YouTube and sure enough a Simple one has audio. Both Windows Media Player and "Movies & TV" aren't playing the audio. So, I guess I can either try to change the audio in Simple, or totally switch to some other player (VLC?) on my computer for when I check sound.

Just as a learning exercise, can I fix the audio in Simple mode? Changing recording format to flv or mkv, and changing audio sample rate to 48k, didn't work.

I have an ASUS G73JH laptop, i7 Q720 processor, 8GB RAM, Radeon Mobility 5800 graphics, ADATA SSD.

I am trying to setup OBS Studio. I am testing it out on Crusader Kings 2.

If I use Simple output mode I get very nice video. For example, the zooming and scrolling is smooth, the text and images are crisp & clear, and most noticeably the fog of war clouds look exactly like they do in-game. But, there is no audio either from the game or the mic - complete silence.
(Output: 1000 bitrate, x264 encoder, 128 audio bitrate, High Quality, mp4 format, 264 encoder)
(Audio: 44.1khz, stereo, desktop default, mic default)
(Video: base 1920x1080, 30FPS)

Now, if all I do is switch to the Advanced output mode (no other changes / clicks / anything), the video is not as good but there is both game and mic audio. The video tends to be a little pixellated where text is hard to read or portraits are a little fuzzy / blurry, especially right after I move and then in a couple seconds it sharpens to look just like in-game as long as I stay still. The fog of war clouds are always pixellated.

I either want to fix the audio in Simple mode, or improve the video on Advanced mode.

In Advanced, I don't know if streaming affects the recording - I'm not streaming, just recording to disk (I would like to know if streaming does affect recording for local only). Just in case, here's both settings.
Streaming tab (encoder 264, 1000 bitrate, keyframe interval 1, NO use CBR, CRF 23, cpu veryfast, YES VFR)
Recording tab (Custom output, output to file, default container format, video bitrate 1000, audio bitrate 128, audio track 1)
Audio tab (each track bitrate 128)
No changes to Audio or Video menu screens.

Also note that this currently results in Simple file size being 2x the Advanced file size.

If it helps, when I record at 60fps it's a very large spike in CPU usage and the resulting video is not smooth when scrolling / zooming with the same quality as Advanced described above (pixellated until a few seconds of stillness, fog of war clouds always pixellated).

Fixed?

K-Lite Codec Pack 12.1.0 Basic fixed the problem in Windows Media Player and Movie Maker. Not in Win10 "Movies & TV" but I don't care about that. I still don't know what the issue was / is, but I've got sound in WMP & MM using the Simple mode that has good video & file size, so I'm happy.

If anyone cares to comment about what they think the root of the problem is, i.e. if there was a way to fix this without having to install KLCP, I'm curious.

Don't rely on windows media player's media format support.
It has a 15+ year history of being horrid.
