Samsung VR-L700 Camcorder to Macbook via A/V cables Issues

Hi, I'm trying to digitise some videos for family. I have videos and the set up is from Samsung VR-L700 camcorder > A/V cables > USB converter > Macbook Air. Nothing shows up in finder so I've been trying to use data capture software to see the camcorder. I've tried VLC which at least shows me the video, but very laggy, I can't work out how to record from VLC so I've downloaded OBS, which my not very technically adept Dad has used easily to convert 16mm film to MP4 (using the same A/V cables, which he has lent to me). I've added USB video to the sources window but can't see anything when I press play on the camcorder. I've tried switching the camcorder off and on, and checked the connections and unplugged and plugged them back in again, swapped USB ports etc but nothing shows up in OBS. Any thoughts or suggestions gratefully received.
