Reducing recording file size

Hi all!

I was hoping someone could help me bring the file size of my OBS recordings. I admit I am a noob when it comes to video recording.

I am using OBS primarily to deliver online training by sharing the Fullscreen Projector Preview in Zoom. The training primarily consists of PowerPoint presentations/GUI of the product I am teaching/whiteboarding. So, nothing fancy. The reason I started using OBS is the transition effects. The recordings are later shared with the students. I want to keep the file size as small as possible without making them unusable.

Whatever Video Encoder setting in recording I choose (I have Nvidia 3070 available, so my options are HEVC and H.264), I am always averaging around 10MB for 1 minute of recording. I want to bring this down to around 5-6 MB per minute without impairing the readability of text.

I tried playing around in advanced settings with CBR/CQP/VBR, etc., changing the bitrates to different values, but every time I test the recording, it turns out 10 MB for 1 minute, like I am not even doing anything.

The most important thing to do is that the output of OBS during the training is clear. Still, I am okay with the recorder doing some video magic to turn down the quality a bit to reduce the size while keeping the readability.

I am grateful for any help, pointing me to a guide or sharing some settings some of you use to achieve this.

Thanks in advance!
