Hi everyone, got a question regarding recordings with Mac at 4K. The computer is a Mac M2 Pro
Using a Sony 4K camera through an 4k60 ElGato, even recording at 4K just the screen seems choppy. It seems to me the mac itself isn't able to handle this type of recording
Im not sure if recording in 4K is even possible with a Mac or would it be best to switch to a windows PC with a GPU?

Or if one can be added to the mac as well? Any settings suggestions if people have recorded in 4K with a mac would be appreciated

Thanks!

The M_ chips are not designed for performance. They're designed for low power. They might have some performance tricks too, but all of that is constrained by the power budget.

Get a chip that is designed for performance, regardless of power, and expect it to eat the battery, if there even is one. If you have to change platforms to get that, then so be it.

If you're coming from a Mac and you do end up switching platforms, you might also have a look at some Linux-based systems. Lots more similarities under the hood between those two, than there is with Windows. I like Ubuntu Studio, because it comes with a low-latency kernel and a bunch of media apps preinstalled and working, but of course there are more to choose from than you could possibly try.
Linux usually runs on PC hardware, so you're looking at that, regardless.
