Recording indicators...

Hi, I'm David and I'm new.
I hate not knowing if OBS is paused or recording or stopped. For example if I'm recording a full screen game. Is it possible to display a recording indicator on the screen which will be hidden from any recording, or even have an external button to indicate status? I know there is an indicator in the taskbar which is useless for maximised games.
Any ideas? An external button with a light would be amazing!

Lastly if any developers are around is there any system code that could ask OBS it's status I could run in Python?
For example - System.OS .../OBS.exe status?...
I could then use a light to indicate recording status then.
