Question / Help Recording gameplay footage - lag on footage

I'm trying to record gameplay capture, the game window doesn't lag, and the preview in OBS doesn't either, but when I watch back the footage, it lags terribly, and there's also this popping sound in the audio.

(Just discovered actually it doesn't seem to lag when the window isn't the active one - if that helps work out why).

You're significantly overloading your CPU.

18:55:57.361: Video stopped, number of skipped frames due to encoding lag: 282/388 (72.7%)
19:02:45.261: Video stopped, number of skipped frames due to encoding lag: 999/1201 (83.2%)
19:09:49.251: Video stopped, number of skipped frames due to encoding lag: 105/434 (24.2%)

I don't think your machine can sustain the veryfast preset at 720p30.

Are you trying to primarily stream or record? Because the log includes both streaming and recording attempts, and in at least one attempt, the performance bottleneck was the GPU, not just the CPU:

19:09:49.244: Output 'simple_file_output': Number of lagged frames due to rendering lag/stalls: 123 (28.3%)

Changing it to Quicksync appears to have fixed the problem (curiously I can't see any presets to the effect of 'veryfast' et. al. - dunno if that's just coz of my version of OBS or my system, all I have are the x264 and Quicksync).

Here is the last log file for the recording with Quicksync: https://obsproject.com/logs/9bcXteKf16GpMkbE Just in case anyone with more experience than me with encoding settings can spot anything I can tweak more, otherwise I'll have some more plays around with it myself. Thank you muchly @Narcogen

Edit: Ahh I've found where the 'veryfast' settings are ...
