Question / Help Recording audio only (video encoder disabled) always stuck at "Stopping Recording..."

I'm sorry for my poor English, I'm not a native speaker. I'll try to keep it short.


Hey,
I'm trying to use OBS Studio 24.0.3 (64 bit) to stream video from an up-to-date Windows 10 PC to a private server, while keeping a recording from only the audio (three sources, two separate tracks) on my local machine. This only works as long as I have a video encoder selected. Once I select "Disable Encoder" the recording will never stop. Resulting files are a couple bytes in size, too.
If I had to guess, I'd say OBS Studio is waiting for the video encoder to finish, but it never started it in the first place. I'm not a software developer and I can't validate this guess at all. Maybe it's just my machine? I would greatly appreciate if someone could try to reproduce this issue and let me know.

It is reproducible, definitely. I also run into this issue in the past when I played around with the ffmpeg custom output. But since I don't know any workaround except actually recording a video with both image and audio info, and you also knew this, I don't feel I can add some new info and contribute to this thread.
I tried ffmpeg output very thoroughly, for example I also tried to output not to mp4 but to native audio-only container format such as mp3 with disabled video encoder, but I wasn't able to get OBS recording with these settings.

To be honest, I don't feel this is an issue so serious that the developers should look into it. There is a viable workaround: record a black video and extract the audio track(s) in a postprocessing step. It's also not requested by many people. I'd rather have video-/streaming-/recording-related features developed instead of this little used issue fixed.

Well then I'm really glad it's not up to us to decide what's being looked into and what isn't. :)

It's an issue and issues need to be fixed. I totally agree this is a niche problem and should be assigned a (very) low priority, but asking developers explicitly to not look into an issue seems wrong to me. Even with limited resources (in terms of developers), you should always strife for your product to be as free of issues as you can possibly get it to be.

Not being an audio recorder isn't really an issue for a piece of software that is primarily a video compositor and switch, though.

Just to be clear, though-- nobody here is asking developers NOT to look into a thing. You've made a post in a volunteer support forum, where users try to help each other with problems, and you've been suggested a valid workaround.

The above isn't a user asking a dev to ignore your issue-- they are suggesting to you that given knowledge of this program's userbase and its history, you might be better served by deploying the workaround than waiting for a dev to put in a special case exception for audio-only recording.

That said, who knows, maybe someone will add it! But this isn't anyone asking them not to, it's simply suggesting that given our knowledge of the subject, it seems unlikely.
