Recording and Remux - file playback problem

Hello,
I've followed the guides, and recorded from VHS tapes into mkv format files.
I then "Remuxed" them into MP4 files.
This worked fine yesterday.

However, now when I record from a VHS tape, when I try to play the mkv or the MP4 file, I receive the message that the files can't be shown unless I buy some HEVC codecs.

Also, when "Remuxing", the green status bar only gets to 99%, but the pop-up windows tells the process is complete, and to click "OK".

I guess I must have done something wrong whilst browsing temany settings, but I can't see what is wrong.
Can anyone advise this newbie please?

Deleting the program and reinstalling it seems to have worked.
I presume it reverted to default settings, but I still don't know what I had done wrong previously.
