Recording a Windows 10 screen

I just installed the latest OBS. I set up the HotKeys with the Space bar (Space) to both Start and Stop Recording. I then pressed the SpaceBar and reduced OBS (-) for the program and then clicked on icons on my Windws 10 screen. I then pressed the Spacebar again. Searching for the screen recording by OBS, I clicked File > Show Recordings and found 2 and played each in VLC Media Player but they didn't display the Windpws 10 icons I pressed in the OBS recording. My goal is to teach others how to use other software programs by clicking on that program's icon and going about the program by recording all the steps with OBS. I'm not sure what's going wrong in trying to record the W10 screen with the new OBS? Thank you.

Setting start/stop to the spacebar is not recommended. If you do that, ANY TIME you press the space bar FOR ANY REASON, the recording will start/stop. Including when you're just typing something in.

You mistake Hotkeys with visualization of keys pressed. Hotkeys in OBS are used for activating functions like start/stop recording while OBS is minimized and you have other apps in foreground.
What you want is 3rd party software that sniffs your keyboard presses and visualizes them. This is no functionality OBS will provide. You can use Nohboard: https://obsproject.com/forum/resources/nohboard.44/ and there is certainly much more software of this kind around.
