recording a music video

Could any of you guide me on this (as I have viewed some of the instructional videos without getting this basic understanding)? I want to record video myself playing instruments in sync, the end result being myself playing in boxes on the screen in a multi-part composition. Is OBS appropriate for this? When I record a file, it doesn't seem to be available for playback without me figuring out where it got saved and then loading it into a scene, which is way too cumbersome considering I will need to record many takes before I get it right. I am using a usb interface and a webcam. Thanks...

I'm not sure what you expect to be easier than this process, exactly...

Without using something like OBS that allows you to play a scene you have already recorded in one window and record you and yourself at the same time, your other option would be to record all the parts separately and put them together using a real video editing program like Final Cut Pro.

If you play the first part out loud while recording the second part, you can use a "Sync Clips on Audio" feature of Final Cut Pro to put all the clips together on the timeline in sync, then simply put them on the screen where you want them in the right sized boxes. Final Cut needs to hear the same music in each separate video to automatically link them - or you can simply sync the clips on the timeline manually.

Thanks for describing the procedure in Final Cut, which I have not used. I prefer not to sink $300 into this, and it looks like FCP as sold in app store requires a more recent OS than my macbook [which can't go beyond high sierra] can run--though perhaps the purchase process accommodates downloading an earlier version, I'm not sure. But anyway, I was planning to assemble this in Shotcut. I suppose I can record my tracks in quicktime, but hoped I could achieve a better workflow in OBS.

You may be able to do the same thing in a free movie editor like iMovie with manual sync that may fit your needs just fine. I produce 2 music videos a week so I push FCP pretty hard.

Thanks for continuing to think about this. iMovie unfortunately will not recognize a webcam, and when it uses the laptop's internal camera it records less than 15 fps.
