Question / Help RECORD SIMPLE VIDEO

Is there some place I can actually see and understand how to record a simple video... I can't tell if I'm doing everything I should be doing.. I can't interpret the tech. terms for all the fancy applications...I just want to record a simple video on my laptop...please help an old out of touch guy.
