Question / Help Radeon R9 290 OBS Encoder Problem

Hi guys

I seem to be having some trouble with my Radeon R9 290 4GB GPU. I wish to record some gameplays but when I choose the H264/AVC Encoder, I can only record a very small portion before my graphics card cuts out and runs at 100% fan speed causing me to force reboot my PC.

I do not wish to use the x264 Encoder due to having such a "crappy" CPU right now (I am currently waiting on a motherboard for an upgraded build), as I know my GPU is currently bottle necked right now.

My specs are currently these:-

CPU - Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU Q9650 @ 3.00GHz
PSU - Corsair CS850M 850w
GPU - Radeon R9 290 4GB GDDR5
RAM - 8GB DDR2
MOBO - ASUS P5E Deluxe

I have all the latest drivers installed, and I believe this to be a Hardware Acceleration problem. I may be wrong but I would like some more info on this.

I have some upgrades currently (AMD FX-8350 8 core Black edition Vishera CPU and 14GB DDR3, but need the motherboard to be delivered before upgrade is complete).

I have a log file to show if needed at the time of crash. Not sure if this will help in any way possible.

Thanks for the help guys, really will appreciate it.

So you've gone directly to their website and not using the updater application on your computer to get them?
Because the updater application on computers is behind the website.

Yes, directly from their website. I am also checking to see if I have the latest VBIOS update for the GPU too. Just to double check it might be a bug with the GPU or not.

Your Driver is not the most recent one, or you have an unclean install. Though the issue is likely in Hardware with a faulty controller causing voltage issues once the rather power hungry encoding chip begins work.

If you have the card overclocked, now would be the time to go back to stock. If it's not overclocked, it might be time to try and RMA the card, if it's still under warranty.

RMA is kind of out the question, as GPU is to old now. I will wait to see if the problem persists when I receive my new motherboard and installed new CPU, if the problem does persists then I will have to change GPU.

I may have found what the problem might have been, not sure yet but hopefully I have found it. It may have been due to a faulty BIOS installation. Will be trying the games I wanted to record in a moment. I just recorded some few moments of a low end game using the GPU encoder. Hopefully it will allow me to record games like Fortnite much better without force reboot black screen.

I believe I may have solved the problem. I installed the latest BIOS to my GPU and I have used the H264 Encoder to record a bit of Fortnite. So my problem may well have been a faulty BIOS install. Thanks for your help anyways guys. I really appreciate it. Just need my new motherboard in order to unlock the full potential of GPU. XD

I cannot believe it was something so simple in the beginning.

Is it possible to get this thread closed as I have solved the issue I have been having. Thanks.
