Quick sync recording PS5 gaming using a capture card - lagging recording

Hi everyone,

As mentioned in the title, I’m recording PS5 gaming videos using a cheap capture card and trying to achieve the best quality possible given my setup. However, I’m running into some issues, and I’d love your advice!

Here’s my setup:
  • Computer: Runs on an Intel iGPU
  • Encoder: Quicksync H.264
  • Rate Control: ICQ, quality set to 24
  • Target usage: TU4
  • Capture Card Resolution: 1920x1080 @ 60 FPS (same for video output)
After recording an Assassin’s Creed Valhalla gameplay session, I noticed that the video quality isn’t bad overall, but the recording occasionally lags. The lag seems to occur during scenes with brighter or higher contrast, not during intense fights.

I’m attaching the log file for reference (if that helps pinpoint the issue).

Here are my questions:
  1. Could the issue be related to my encoder settings?
  2. Would it help to switch from H.264 to HEVC?
  3. Should I stick with ICQ rate control or consider adjusting the quality range, target usage, or another setting?
  4. Are there any specific settings I should tweak to make the recording smoother and lag-free?
Thank you in advance for your help! I’d really appreciate any tips.
