I've asked about this too. USB devices of all the same model are hard for software to track
apparently. I asked before if there was some kind of number like MAC address on ethernet that
they could scan for and link the OBS assignment back up to the USB camera... I don't think I got a response. Yep nothing-

I'm just restoring a camera that I use for teaching my class because it no longer showed up as a source...it happens about twice a month. Fix this please...this should be on top of the to do list. In a nutshell, a Scene, which uses a camera as its source, suddenly no longer shows the source (a webcam) that it has shown for the past two weeks. On a Mac using Monterey, but this behavior has persisted for months. Using latest version of OBS.

We've been using two identical webcams since spring 2020. Took some effort to get it to work, but since then without a problem. To throw in some probably obvious remarks:
  • Always use the same cameras at the same usb ports, i.e. tape a number to them. If things get messed up, within Windows Device Manager (Run, devmgmt.msc) remove them and restart the laptop.

  • Close the OBS Studio program either via File, Exit menu or via Controls pane (bottom right) Exit button. Our experience was that using the windows X or Alt+F4 does not store some settings properly (at least on OBS 25.0.4 Win in March 2020, so I don't remember the details).

Those are good suggestions.
I'm still hoping for a more robust handling of USB by obs sometime...

I think you are barking up the wrong tree when you say "by obs" when referencing the handling of USB. I have at least 9 programs that can access my USB webcam and NONE of them pick up the feed from it after a system restart. If I unplug it and plug it back in, ALL programs are then able to see the feed. I also never have an issue if the system is powered up from a shutdown. This behavior tells me that Windows is the software that needs a more robust handling of USB. Windows 10, build 19043.1348.
