Please help before I lose my mind.

Hi all,
So I'm a newbie to OBS and somewhat of a technophobe and I'm trying to set it up to record Fortnite gameplay. I've managed to get it all set up, however, I keep running into the same problem. So when I open the fortnite window to add a game capture the audio output capture is picked up straight away but when I close it the sound goes away leaving us with no sound from the game whatsoever. I've tried all the basic troubleshooting. Last night I cracked it as the sound stayed on when I launched fortnite through the epic games launcher but when we've gone to go on it again today it's not worked. I'm absolutely losing my shit with it, it's probably staring me in the face but I just don't know where I'm going wrong. If anyone has any idea where I've gone wrong please remember when it comes to technology I'm subnormal so be please be kind and dumb it down for me!
Thanks in advance!

The Application and Game Captures are nice ideas, but they still have bugs. The older ways are still reliable, but a bit more involved.

Take the "fancy" captures back out, and get your rig back to being playable without OBS running, then install an audio loopback driver. This one seems to be popular:
That gives you a virtual speaker and a virtual mic. Send the game to that virtual speaker, and have OBS pick up that virtual mic.

Or, if you want to hear ALL of what your speakers/headphones are doing, then you don't need the loopback. Just use the Desktop Audio or Output Capture, set to that device. BUT, if you use OBS's Monitor with that setup, you'll get an echo, because the Capture happens *after* the Monitor and everything else are mixed together to send out. It really is EVERYTHING that the speakers/headphones are doing.

For visuals, use a Display or Screen Capture.
