hi guys,
what are the requirements to play/ watch a live stream?
would it be possible to use a raspberry pi 3b for that? it runs / supports windows and linux:
  • Quad-core 1200MHz 64bit ARMv8 processor (BCM2837 chipset)
  • 1024MB RAM LPDDR2
  • 10/100 BaseT Ethernet
  • Onboard Wi-Fi (BCM43143)
  • Onboard Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE)
  • 40-pin GPIO header
  • 4 USB ports
  • MicroSD slot
  • 4-polige jack connector voor Stereo output en Composite video
  • Micro USB feed circuit upgraded to support 2.4 Ampere
  • CSI poort for the Raspberry Pi camera
  • DSI poort for the Raspberry Pi touchscreen
  • HDMI connector voor FullHD video
+ attach a screen
i want to build my own set-up for a project at MASS MoCA.
please help out.

second part question:
would it also be possible to livestream with the raspberry pi3 set-up?

can a simple android 4 tablet be used to play / look at a live stream?
thanks in advance.
kind regards,
roma

You can WATCH a stream with a raspberry pi just fine. Depending on what method you use you either use a libreelec install with the addon for twitch or youtube, or just add a special playlist file with the rtmp info.

thanks!
that's super helpful! i never used a raspberry pi before.
i'm going to need youtube.
will it be possible to rotate the youtube image on my screen? and zoom in? through code or otherwise?
i need to use the screens in the museum installation vertically - portrait instead of the landscape it's live streamed in.
without black bars.
i was thinking to do that through using the live stream as a source so that i can manipulate it, but there are probably better ways and ones that are possible with the raspberry pi3 set up.

plus: if i just WATCH 7 different live streams at the same time, on different screens, will i need a special kind of internet? bandwidth? are they all going to stotter? how do i prevent that?
please let me know.

If you want the stream to be without black bars, you're best off having the source stream rotated rather than trying to rotate the feed on the pi.

good point. i know. but if that's not possible?

and
is it possible to watch 7 streams at the same time? each through their own raspberry pi3 and screens?

If each stream is being fed to a separate pi, yes it is possible.
1080p30 streams don't need the full power of a pi3 either.

thanks. yes streaming on youtube, fairly low data, not HD or anything.
someone just suggested the best setup would be using HDMI screens with a USB port, so that i can power the rapsberry pi3 through mini USB and need a small HDMI cable + only have to extend the power cable. that this set-up will be cheaper than VGA screens in the end, because of the conversion to HDMi input of the raspberry.

does anyone know if using tablets would be an option? for instance running on android 4? or is the performance of this OS not so good compared to the linux / windows / libreELEC with youtube add-on? for livestream or watching livestream

the H264 stream that youtube puts out would be played back with hardware acceleration in the decoding. Things like kodi installed in libreelec or something like screenly would do the job. A tablet running android 4 would still need HDMI out to go to a larger screen.

hi thanks
don't know the exact format of the streaming yet.
but you mean the libreELEC OS with kodi running on it or screenly. so no youtube add-on? or as well?

with the tablet option i meant 7 tablets without raspberries. so watching the livestream on the screens of the tablets. is the android 4 OS good / fast enough for that?

libreelec is a kodi-optimized distribution.
You'd still need the youtube addon for kodi installed, but that's in the official repository.

Having the stream on the tablets is a maybe, depending more on the hardware of the tablet.

okay, thanks

so what's the minimum requirement for hardware on a tablet to watch a livestream? android or otherwise?
is windows or linux better in live streaming than android, or is the OS not so influential?

It's pretty much all hardware, and the raspberry pis are likely to be the least problematic to deal with.
