Question / Help Optimal Settings for OBS local recording and compressing output using Handbrake

Hi, I'd like to find out the best possible settings to use for a local recording that will be compressed by Handbrake. I assume that I should have lossless settings and use the x264 codec? I have a horrible upload speed, so I use Handbrake to squish files down as much as possible.

Preferred output is a 1080p60 .mp4, with optimal settings for YouTube upload. Game I'll mostly be recording is Overwatch, if that's important.

OBS Studio
Monitor is 1440p 144Hz, scaling to 1080p for output file.
CPU: i7-6700k
GPU: GTX 1070
RAM: 16GB DDR4-2400

Any help/tips are much appreciated! :3

(Bonus points for suggested Handbrake settings?)

Simple output mode, indistinguishable quality, software low cpu use.
Do NOT save directly to mp4.

Correct. Because you still have source footage when dealing with handbrake, you're more able to convert.

If you're just uploading to youtube, youtube is capable of handling flv files fine.

Harold, couple of quick questions re the advice you just gave about using .flv

1) If you are recording multiple audio channels, .flv seems to be inappropriate. What alternative would you suggest if not .mp4 where there are for example 3 audio tracks being recorded?

2) I record in OBS then bring into premiere pro for editing. I will then likely output from premiere losslesly and then use handbrake to compress for YT. Does this alter your answer to 1) above?

Cheers!

Cool, thanks. Will take the advice, cheers.

Why dont we like .mp4? Im not up on my containers, i just like ylto understand why im doing things rather than follow blindly.

Because if ANYTHING prevents the file from finalizing properly with mp4, the entire recording is rendered useless.

MKV and FLV are bordering on indestructible.

MP4 is not suited for real-time encoding, because they need to be finalized. If that process gets interrupted in any way, the mp4 will be digital garbage.
