Only getting a rainbow of colored bars, and not a video

Hi, I bought a Guremok Audio and Video Capture card that has HDMI at one end and USB-C at the other. The HDMI cable has the 3 colored plugs for the Toshiba VCR (inserted into the out ports) at the other end. I'm using a Mac laptop with Sequoia. Any idea why I am seeing the rainbow of colored bars and not seeing a video? The tape is running. Thank you!

Signal converters are not just wiring adapters. They have to decode the incoming signal, and then re-encode it to send out. A lot like a camera looking at a screen. And of course that only goes the one direction that it's designed for.

Are you sure your adapter cable itself goes the right direction?

Yes, fairly sure. How could it be going in the wrong direction? I get an HDMI input from the VHS machine to the capture card which then hooks into the laptop via a USB-C port.

You have a Composite video signal with separate audio. You need an HDMI signal that includes both video and audio.
If you have a converter cord that takes Composite and gives HDMI, then it can work.
If you have a converter cord that takes HDMI and gives Composite, then it can't.
Those are not the same thing.

I see, thank you very much. I ordered an HDMI to RCA cord instead of the other way around. I've now ordered the RCS to HDMI version. Fingers crossed.
