Hi Members,

I am new to OBS and would like to capture a live stream from the internet on my monitor screen. I am using one monitor and OBS is sitting on top of my live stream. How do I configure OBS so it allows me to capture only the live stream and not everything on my screen?

Thank you

Don't use display capture.
OBS can't magically exclude windows.
Make sure Aero is ENABLED if you're using window capture.

Hi Harold,

I am using windows capture and ENABLED Aero in the OBS Video settings and changed the theme in win7 to Aero. No luck. Still have OBS sitting on top of my browser window. How do I capture a soncreen recording (of the content in my browser) if OBS is sitting on top of it? Need OBS to get out of the way (for lack of a better description).

Thank you

That was a typo in my previous reply. It was amended. Aero was, and is ENABLED. I am using "windows capture" as a source. Also made sure I selected an Aero windows theme in Win7 control panel. Done!

Ok, I'm trying to test OBS by capturing a video I uploaded to my youtube channel. Yes, I am trying to record the video on playback in youtube using Chrome and Firefox. I started from the beginning and added a new source (window capture) and noticed in the "Create/Select Source" window that there was a ticked-box that automatically defaulted to "Make source visible". I un-ticked this box and now OBS is gone in the "Properties for Window Capture" window and now OBS is not showing, only my browser window is showing. Just the way I preferred!

All was good for awhile and then suddenly I could no longer see my source (whatever you are recording or capturing with OBS). In other words, all I received was a black screen. After two grueling days of digging around for a solution, I finally stumbled upon Jim's post that made a lot of sense. I believe my real problem was not with OBS but rather my graphics card configuration.

Jim's post in the OBS forum:

I kindly suggest reading the additional link below that also addresses conflicting graphics cards, especially the question at the bottom under "Questions and Answers". The title of the question is: Game capture is not working on Windows 10?

Trust me on this, the solution is not only regulated to windows 10. This worked for me and I am running windows 7.

Here is the Question and Answer from the link above: Again, this worked for me and I am running windows 7.
I started with step # 3 and it fixed my problem. Step # 3 below starts by saying: "Right-click an empty space on the desktop and click "NVIDIA Control Panel".

Game capture is not working on Windows 10?

I already tried the compatibility through properties as well as reinstalling, no luck. I have tried: Running the obs program as an administrator and using compatibility mode. I think it was caused by: Upgrading to Windows 10

Here are some solutions for your problem.
  • Try running the captured source in full-screen window mode.

  • Right-Click "Game Capture" and "Properties". Check "Anti-Cheat".

  • Right-click an empty space on the desktop and click "NVIDIA Control Panel". Click "Manage 3D settings" and "Program Settings". Add Open Broadcast Software. Select either "Use global settings (High-performance NVIDIA processor)" or "Integrated graphics" (see what works) in the "Select preferred graphics processor for this program" drop-down menu. Click "Preview stream" in OBS to see if it works.

  • Start the 64-bit version with administrative rights (right-click the 64-bit link in the start menu and select "Run as administrator").

Thank you for your help.
