Olympus stylus 1 won't work

Hi, I have a small camera Olympus Stylus 1.
My goal is to use my phone as an external screen while I film. (because I can't flip the camera's screen)
So I got a basic video capture card.
But when I plug the HDMI cable into the camera, it automatically takes the lens back in. It does stays turned on, but the screen turns black and none of the buttons will work. Just as if it was ready to transfer what's on the SD card or idk.
Any ideas how to fix that?
Does it mean that the camera doesn't work with capture cards?

Kindly
Mathilde

Sounds like the camera is broken. I can understand an early-tech slow processor switching to playback mode when you plug in a video cord, just to keep the processing load down (which already kills your use case), but the buttons should still work to control the playback. According to Google, it was new in 2013, which is towards the end of possibility for that, if I remember right.

Since you have a phone, can you record directly on that? Find a selfie stick that has a 1/4"-20 screw connection between the stick and the clip, then take the clip off and put it on a 1/4"-20 tripod instead...

OK thank you, I'll send the capture card back.
