I get the error message: obs studio failed to initialize video

Windows 7 is not supported. As long as you have a legal copy of Win 7 you can update to Windows 10 for free:

Thank you a lot, I am afraid this machine, which is my father's, barely can handle windows 7. Any way to get it to work with an equally obsolete software? I also tried obs v0.659b, no joy. Looks like it installs correctly but no added sources work "Would you really like to record a black screen?"

The processor is my sig is 2 years older than yours. I tested OBS 26.0.2 with Windows 10 20H2 (and paint.net running in background) and it only used ~2.9 GB of RAM, this should leave with ~1 GB to spare.

You can keep trying the same thing and expecting different results, but that's insane, so don't do that.

Windows 10 needs less resources, less memory footprint in c:\windows, and runs faster than Windows 7. No reason to not upgrade.
