OBS video recorder shuts off randomly

Hi all, I use OBS on my laptop for security purposes.

I have a problem though. My OBS camera was recording the other day; I had recorded about 5 hours of footage. It switched off randomly at the 5 hour and 14 minute mark and stopped recording just as I was leaving to go to work.

There was more than enough disk space for the software to work. I have a 250 gb hard drive.

Can you please tell me why the OBS video recording software stopped recording? Is that normal?

Thanks

Hi, I'm not an OBS expert, but thought I might get the ball rolling with some questions:

Are you using OBS to record your desktop, or to record an external camera (or the laptop camera?)

Secondly, was your laptop plugged into power during recording, or was it running off battery?

I would also be curious to know, do you often leave OBS running and recording for such periods of time, like, is this something you do frequently, and it hasn't gone wrong before? And following on from that, how long do your recordings usually end up being, if they don't auto stop?

And lastly, you mention having a 250Gb hard drive, but you never actually mentioned how much of that is free space, simply having a large hard drive doesn't mean it won't get filled up at some point.

The problem with stuff like this is (well, of course under normal circumstances OBS shouldn't stop recording, that's not normal), but there could be a number of things at play here - maybe a spike in power at your house caused the usb device to disconnect for a split second (I have a mini-fridge that causes that issue), and OBS didn't pick it back up, maybe OBS actually just crashed, and so there might be a dump/log file about it made by the program. I would also advise checking event viewer as it may give you an indication of what happened to your system at the time the recording stopped.

Those might be some helpful things to know/try for when an OBS expert reads your post - best of luck to you.

please post a log with either streaming or recording session data, see the link below for more information. a 5 hour recording would be a very large file. for comparison, i have a 4 minute recording, made with OBS, that is 1.2GB in size.
