This has been going on for a long time and it seems like for a long time I've been at an impasse.
As long ago as OS 10.12 the Apple operating system numbered the different cameras that are of the same name.
Sometime between OS 10.13 and os 11 the numbers stopped appearing on multiple instances of the same USB camera.
Apple told me to use the software that comes with the camera.
The problem is my camera didn't come with any software. My camera is an sq-11.
No one wants to take responsibility for Mac software for the sq-11.
Also it seems like OBS either does not want to, or is unable to, keep track of cameras in the USB chain that are identically named.
I've been told there's nothing that can be done at the OBS level to make it recognize different cameras.
OBS people say it's all up to the Mac operating system to fix that.
Apple says that they can't change it because they're relying on cameras to be able to change your name.
They said they're using smart cameras.
Doesn't that mean by implication that if they're using smart cameras that the OS is becoming dumber?
I tried writing to Apple they gave me the runaround.
I know obs was made by a bunch of volunteers who wanted to create an outstreaming product. Knowing the limited amount I know about obs it seems like OBS would have to fundamentally change to keep track of multiple cameras of the same name beyond a certain point every time you turn off and re-turn on the computer.
It's only seems to happen when I shut off and turn back on the computer
When I turn back on the computer from a fresh boot it loses track of which camera is which camera. It has the reserved camera names that I gave it in OBS but it is confused as to which USB camera corresponds with that camera name.
Once I define it on the new boot up, it seems to work well, but the problem is every time I start my computer I have to redefine it.
I guess I could sleep it, but I don't know how well an Apple does when sleeping.
How does Windows and Linux deal with this? (By the way is it pronounced like the character from Charlie Brown except with an X instead of an S, or is it pronounced like the first name Linda. In other words short I or long I.)
Does Windows and Linux have ways to differentiate different cameras that have the same USB name that Mac OS does not after sometime between OS 10.12 and os 11?
Most people on Apple say there's a security reason why USB is not numbered? Actually how does not numbering to identically name stuff help security? If anything numbering them helps identify them in security. The least it does it makes you aware that there's multiples of a different device and makes you careful not to click on the wrong one.
It's nothing I can't get around it's just that I have to prepare more time to start broadcast and I can't instantly jump from my classic to my retro setup or vice versa without doing some camera programming.
