Question / Help OBS Studio Won't Start Recording

Hello, I'm trying to get OBS Studio working so I can try to get back into Youtube and into Streaming. I seem to have ironed out most of the settings and problems I've been having, however, now that I can see the game in the game capture window, whenever I push the "start recording" button or hotkey with the game in the foreground or tabbed out, nothing happens.

From your log:
17:53:22.107: Adapter 1: NVIDIA GeForce 840M
[...]
17:53:43.499: [NVENC encoder: 'simple_h264_stream'] Failed to open NVENC codec: Generic error in an external library

As I understand it, you're trying to record using NVENC on a graphics card that does not support NVENC. If Shadowplay does not work on your graphics card, then NVENC won't work via any other method either.

Well that's simpler than I thought it would be. I read somewhere that it should work with any nvidia card in a startup tutorial or something like that. I'll try one of the other encoding settings, any recommendation as to which one should work better? Thank You.

No, it does not work with all Nvidia cards - not even all Nvidia cards with the right architecture. In general, you need an Nvidia card marked "GTX" from the Kepler architecture or higher to use NVENC. To make things more confusing, even mobile/laptop cards marked "GTX" don't reliably support NVENC.

You could use Intel Quick Sync for your encoder, if you want to stick with a hardware encoder. Otherwise, you would use x264, which likely will produce better quality per bitrate, but will be more CPU intensive. In either case, check this guide for settings recommendations.
