Default is good to show that "something" works, fresh out of the box and knowing nothing. Beyond that, it's a liability. Always choose a specific device, and Disable what you're not using. Then you won't have Default randomly switch to something else and kill your rig. (because it will)
So, Disable and remove everything (keep your workspace clean), figure out which device is your mic, choose that specifically, and see if it works.
