Question / Help OBS refuses to capture mic input

The Mic/Aux volume monitor doesn't budge an inch. It'll capture my desktop audio though.

I use my web cam for a mic source and have used it many times in the past. But today it just won't. The only other audio capture device I have is my Oculus Rift with in-built mic, which I previously capture fine, and even that won't capture.

I ruled out problems with the web cam itself by doing a test record via Windows Voice Recorder. Also, if I go to my sound settings in Windows you can see the monitor fluctuating as I make noise.

According to the log, the microphone in your camera is not being recognized. Does it work as a camera? Does OBS have permission to use it?

According to the logfile, you don't have another audio source configured. Check Settings > Audio.

There's a source called "audio capture 2" but I can't tell what it's configured for.

You can't have two inputs set to the same device, that won't work. Either set the mic in settings > audio as you have done, or delete that entry and configure the audio capture in the scene to be your webcam, and add it individually to scenes as an existing device. (If you add the same device twice separately, only one will work at a time. I don't know if that's what is causing your problem, but if so, delete the Audio Input Capture 2.)

yeah I've tried all kinds of configurations of this.
Here's a screen shot of what my set up looks like: https://imgur.com/a/1MTCK2t
I was playing some desktop audio at the time, note the monitor, the sound was coming out of my speakers and note the mic monitor. Just to reiterate, the mic works as I did a quick test with the Windows audio recorder.

The lines in the logfile indicate that OBS wants access to the camera's microphone and can't get it.

This can be caused by:

wrong privacy settings
device exclusivity and another program accessing the same device
duplicate device in both settings > audio and an audio source in a scene (active or inactive scene, hidden or visible source).

I don't use a webcam, but I'm guessing it should not be set as your microphone there, but as a video and audio source in your scene, no? Or are you using it only as a microphone and not as a camera?

Don't know what to tell you. Logfile clearly shows OBS unable to get access to the camera's microphone. It waits, retries, then gives up.

ok, well at least I know what it's trying to do now. I'm fairly sure a computer restart will sort it, or something incidental. Or I'll have to buy a normal mic.

That might be a good idea in any case. (The new mic and the restart.)

Are you saying you haven't restarted once since this issue occurred?
