Question / Help OBS not recognizing camera

Good morning!
We're having a hard time getting our new setup working, OBS doesn't recognize the cameras (we have two Canon HF G50 4k camcorders). We tried connecting them through a video mixer (Roland V-02HD PAC1), we've also tried connecting one straight to the PC but we can't find the camera. Our goal is to record and eventually stream our church services.

I've done several searches and have found two possible solutions but i don't know which will work for us: Either use a video capture device, or use a capture card.... which do we need? and do we need two of these devices for the two cameras? or just one? etc. thanks!

A capture card is a video capture device; the terms are used interchangeably.

How are they currently connected to the PC? Generally, yes, you're going to need a capture card (or two) to get the camera feeds in; most camcorders do not provide video-over-USB in the UVC standard. A video mixer might, but no guarantees.

If you want the individual camera feeds to both be simultaneously available in OBS, you'll need a capture device for each one.
If you want to use the video mixer to handle switching the cameras, then take the output from that into OBS, you'll only need one.

In either case, if you are getting an external USB-based capture device, make CERTAIN that it is USB 3.0; 2.0 devices have a very long inherent delay which will be a pain in the fundament to sync up and work around. Internal PCIe capture devices and USB 3.0 devices generally don't have this issue.
Also, avoid anything by Hauppage like the plague. They're awful and problematic.

Do make sure you plug the cameras into a TV to check if they provide 'clean' HDMI output, or if the HDMI out has the camera UI (exposure, ISO, battery level, etc) baked into the video.

thank you! The cameras are on HDMI, to a video mixer, and into to the PC. We'll go ahead and add a capture card in to the mix. Great suggestion with the USB 3, i'll look out for that.
Thanks again!
