OBS keeps randomly crashing (with Cities Skylines 2)

Today, Cities Skylines 2 was released, and I installed it from the Xbox Store on my PC because you get the game for free. However, my experience with it tonight has been filled with a lot of issues. It seems that while I'm streaming, OBS keeps crashing. I initially thought things were improving after making some changes, like setting compatibility to Windows 7/8 and increasing the process priority to above normal. But those adjustments didn't seem to help at all.

I'm wondering if the game itself might be poorly optimized and causing these crashes. I've already updated my graphics card to the latest drivers and installed all the Windows updates, including the optional ones.

CPU: i9 13900k
GPU: RTX 4090
RAM: 32GB
SSD/M.2: WD SN850X 4TB

I added logs from the last 2 crashes, including two regular log files. Hope this helps! I don't think I've had any problems with streaming other games.

Many thanks already for the help.

does it happen if you disable the vertical canvas plugin?
Good question, I'm going to give that a try (uninstalled the plugin as we speak)! I'm not using the plugin, so it can be disabled. Will update the topic when I have an update!

It sadly dindn't solve the issue, OBS still crashes. After like 15 minutes OBS crashes while streaming. Deleted the entire vertical canvas plugin.

Tried loads of things, sadly, none of them seem to work.

- Tried reïnstalling OBS and only imported the scenes
- Deleted all plugins
- Updated Windows
- Updated Graphics Card Drivers
- Updated BIOS
- Double checked RAM settings (XMP)

And this is what I get according to the Windows logs:

Sadly Googling doesn't offer much help about this topic.

the reports from windows' event viewer are less helpful than the crash reports from obs itself.
Provide a crash report from obs itself AND a regular OBS session log from the matching launch of obs.

i do also have the same problem, not only with SC2, also in other Games. OBS will crash mostly about 10-20min. It allways points to avcodec-60.dll
i also tryed the newest version of OBS but still the same
Crash
Log
Hopefully people can help me out further. Firstly I thought I might have been my RAM, since Cities Skylines 2 requires a lot of it (and games like Star Citizen). So I upgrade to 64GBs of RAM, but sadly, after playing Cities Skylines 2 yesterday, crashes.

I added two crash files, from the moment OBS crashes when playing Cities Skylines 2. Also added a regular log files from the around the time Cities Skylines 2 crashed.

It seems in both scenario's crash files there is a line called: audio-io: audio thread (Crashed).

It seems you have the same error message Chaos. I installed a NVIDIA HD Audio plugin a while ago, uninstalled that just in case, but I'm almost certain that didn't cause the issue.

I think it might has to do something with either our CPU (i9 13900k) or GPU (RTX 4090).

After doing some research, it seems I might have found a possible solution. I notice that more people with the same specifications (I9 13900k, RTX4090) are facing the similarproblems. Also some similar problems regarding some other applications and games. I still have to try out this method for Cities Skylines 2 and OBS, but so far, the solution seems promising.

There is a program called "Intel(R) Extreme Tuning Utility". The Intel® Extreme Tuning Utility is used to overclock, monitor, and stress a system. It seems when I adjust two settings, the games that gave me problems before, are running perfectly fine! I also faced some issues with Unreal Engine games, getting error messages like "out of memory", even though the CPU/GPU/RAM were just fine. When you download the program, you should adjust two settings:

- Performance Core Ratio
- Efficient Core Ratio

I set the Performance Core Ratio to 50 (was 55), and the Efficient Core Ratio to 40 (was 43). Make sure you Apply the settings. It seems my computer runs way more stable now and so far no issues. As I said, have to put it to the test with OBS and Cities Skylines 2.

Tagging @Chaos1699 for fyi.
