Question / Help OBS high GPU usage while encoding via NVENC in the 20%

Hey there,

so I have this issue(?) that when I start encoding in obs, either streaming or recording, my GPU usage jumps to about 20% even in an completely empty szene with just gamecapture randomly in there.

I can't recall when it was using so much GPU. Etiher I just interpret to much into this or I have an issue that I'm not aware of. Since none of the games that I play run at a high enough GPU usage I did not encounter any issues. Here is a log file with an recording attempt after i switched to the empty scene that I talked about.

I'm using stripped down NVIDIA driver but I don't think that could be an issue. I'm on the newest one available.

Maybe someone has an idea that could lead me to troubleshoot this correctly! Thanks!

I think you're looking too hard into something that's not really an issue. You're not coming close to any kind of limits, and media sources require GPU usage on top of the standard scene rendering.

Also, where are you getting your 20% usage from? Is that overall usage? Encoder usage? The GPU has several different parts to it.

The GPU also doesn't have to fully power up if it doesn't need to -- it might just be staying in a lower power state, with lower clock speeds, meaning the 100% value that the usage is being compared to is actually lower than the true maximum-potential 100%, which would end up reporting a higher usage percentage than it should be. If you really want to be sure, run GPU-Z and take a look at your core and memory clocks and see if they actually clock up to full spec.

Again... you're not running into any limits, and 20% is still very low.
