Question / Help OBS freezing/crashing

I haven't had any of these issues until the past two days. This all started happening while trying to stream the new Forza game. I noticed my stream would shutdown after a few minutes of playing. I would tab over to OBS and notice that the scene would be frozen. Clicking "stop stream" made the button change to "stopping stream" but just hung there. Closing it usually isn't an issue but sometimes I'd have to kill the program through task manager. Only occasionally would a crash log be generated.

I have tried rolling back video card drivers and uninstalling logitech's web cam drivers. Neither of those helped. I started noticing that OBS really only freezes when my CPU is getting maxed out. Whenever it happens my task manager reads 100% CPU usage. I've tested this multiple times now. All I have to do is alt tab over to Forza and play for a little bit. When the CPU usage hits 100% OBS freezes.

Here is the latest log file:

I was able to get it to generate a crash log by trying to switch through different scenes while it was frozen.

I have the same problem. It's not specific to just one game. For me it happens to any game.
After a while the stream or recording just freeze and I have to press Stop streaming or Stop recording.

Switching my renderer to OpenGL in the Settings > Advanced has now stopped the crashing for me.

Edit: It doesn't crash, but it runs like total crap in OpenGL mode.

OpenGL will run badly on Windows. The OpenGL renderer was more meant for Mac and Linux systems.

Your regular log does not show the usual 887A0005 error that typically accompanies the infamous Windows 10 Anniversary Update issue. However, if you strongly suspect Windows 10 Updates, you may wish to try one of the following workarounds.
  1. Disable the OBS Studio preview.
  2. Use Display Capture or Window Capture instead of Game Capture.
  3. If you're using an Nvidia card, rollback your Nvidia drivers to 368.81 or 365.19.
  4. Rollback Windows updates KB3176938, KB3189866, KB3193494, or their successors.
  5. Revert to a Windows 10 build that is before the Anniversary Update.
Option 1 may or may not work, I haven't seen enough testing on it. Option 2 works when using Display Capture, but with a performance penalty. Option 2 with Window Capture is unconfirmed. Option 3 is still unconfirmed if it works. Option 4 seems to work without fail. Option 5 also works without fail, but it is sort of a nuclear option.

If you try any of these on an affected system, please let us know what you did and whether or not it worked for you.

Lastly, please understand that removing Windows Updates is a temporary measure, especially on Windows 10. Windows 10 is far more aggressive about its automatic updates than earlier versions of Windows, and you can't turn them off, only delay them. Uninstalling Windows Updates may also inadvertently break other things, and may expose your system to security vulnerabilities that the updates had patched.

I appreciate the help, but I'm just not going to stream Forza. It's the only game I'm having this issue with and if I uninstall the Anniversary Update it won't even let me play the game. Rolling back drivers also makes the game performance worse. Bummer.

Yeah, the new Forza is particularly difficult that way, and I've seen others easily reproduce the issue with that game. You could still try the other workarounds I posted that don't involve uninstalling the Anniversary Update. Uninstalling the AU is the last resort, if it is really that important to you to stream/record and only if the other workarounds do not work.

You may also want to check out the newest Windows 10 Update posted today, September 29, 2016 — KB3194496 (OS Builds 14393.222), in the off chance that it fixed whatever Microsoft broke in the first place. I'm not holding my breath though. =/

Let us know what you decide to do and how it turns out. Should other issues arise, we're always here to help. Good luck!
