"OBS does not support using x264 with 10-bit formats."

I recently helped my nephew upgrade from a Radeon RX580 to an RTX 3060Ti. After he installed his new card he started receiving the error in the title. He is running a 3600X with 16 GB of RAM on Windows 10. He is using OBS v. 28.0.3. His video drivers are updated. I've been trying for about an hour to get him up and recording but I have gotten nowhere. I don't stream or record so I don't know much about OBS. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

please post a log file, that will help someone to better assist you...

but, i would start by changing the encoder to H.264. since he has the 3060 might as well use the GPU.

That's correct.
Simple change the color format in advanced settings to NV12 like in the image bellow:

Then, to avoid further issues, use the Auto-configuration Wizard (tools menu) and apply the settings it suggest. Restart OBS and test for more than 30 seconds doing as you normally do, including playing games, full camera or whatever you normally do.
Now look inside Help menu. Upload the current log file and paste the url to the log in here. Click on the Analize button to start troubleshooting common issues.

Switching to NV12 worked. He was using I010. Thanks for the help! I'll update this comment with the logfile once I receive it.

Just go to Setting, Advanced and set Color Format to P010 and change Color Space to Rec.2100, Color Rage to Full. Then OBS can record with PQ format. The output file codecs shown
Color primaries: ITU-R BT.2020
Color transfer function: SMPTE ST2084 (PQ)
Color space: ITU-R BT.2020.
